Machine Guarding is an essential and necessary requirement for schools to ensure students and staff are safe.
Machine Guarding and inadequate lockout procedures are among the top four causes of workplace accidents in Ontario. The number of injuries and their severity continue to be a focus of OHSA, resulting in significant fines and penalties in schools throughout the province by the MOL.
"In Ontario, close to 80% of injuries affecting students using machines in industrial arts, wood shops, automotive shops and similar programs, involve lost or disfigured fingers, hands or thumbs. Another 11% involve damage to eyes, and 7% to hands and feet."
- Health and Safety Ontario, 2012.
What the Law Says:
Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act requires that employers take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances to protect workers. Sections 25, 27 and 28 refer to duties and responsibilities of employers, supervisors and workers.
Factors Contributing to the High Number of Injuries:
There are a number of contributing factors to machine related injuries; experts have attributed these to the following:
- An emphasis on deadlines over safety
- Inadequate training and education
- Outdated guarding technology
- Outdated hazard assessments
- Being unaware of OHSA health and safety requirements
